Where did you grow up?

Growing up I became accustomed to living in the great area of Hampton Roads. It's such a great mesh of military, beach life and overall great people! However, I would often spend my summers in New York, which eventually led to my first introduction into the field of Social Work!

What personal challenges have you overcome or are working through as a result of your upbringing?

Personally, I have been able to overcome many life hardships including emotional distress, depression, anxiety and lack of FINANCES!

What inspired you to become a therapist?

Wanting to help others is a passion and fire that has been ingrained into my DNA. The "Healing Spirit" is definitely something that comes naturally for me and something that I have been so grateful to be blessed with.

What are your specialties?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, Moral Recognition Therapy, Client Centered Approach, Mindfulness Techniques

Biography:

Deciding what I wanted to do with my life was a "no brainer."I had already decided prior to graduating high school that I was going to help others. In 2013, I found myself graduating with a Clinical Psychology Degree; ready to save the world. However, prior to saving the world, I was able to obtain my Master of Social Work Degree in 2015; leading me to be a real life superhero today! Remember all social workers wear capes! Over the last few years, I have been able to devote my time to professional development. This includes trainings in multiple therapies and continuous education for best practice in the field.

What personal challenges have you overcome or are working through as a result of your upbringing?

Some personal challenges that I am currently working on due to my upbringing is understanding that I am ENOUGH. I do not have to be perfect, I do not have to save everyone, and I cannot pour from an empty cup. Life does not have to be a struggle despite what I witnessed growing up. Substance use and undiagnosed mental illness was prevalent in my family. Mental illness was very taboo in my family and society. A mindset of "pray it away and you will be good" I wanted to become a therapist to show my family and other African Americans that it is okay to not be okay. It is okay to have God and therapist too! You don't need to be ashamed of your battles, resiliency is within you!

What personal challenges have you overcome or are working through as a result of your upbringing?

My upbringing was okay, but I have had many struggles and tribulations due to being raised by a single mother. Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in the projects of Portsmouth, VA. Some of the communities I lived in growing up are Madison Village, Academy Park, Ida Barbour, Jeffry Wilson, and Swanson Homes.

What personal challenges have you overcome or are working through as a result of your upbringing?

My trauma history includes poverty, spiritual abuse, rape, abduction, exposure to community violence, and dysfunctional family dynamics. I believe even therapists without as rich of a trauma history as mine can benefit from therapy - everyone can. That said, I have been receiving ongoing therapy since 2014.

What inspired you to become a therapist?

Initially, my aim was to figure out my family, then it became to figure out myself, and ultimately, it became to equip others' with self-awareness - the single weapon capable of breaking generational curses.

What are your specialties?

I specialize in helping Black women thrive after interpersonal trauma, particularly mother-daughter dysfunction as I've found that many of the other traumas Black women bring into therapy (toxic friendships, cyclical romantic relationships, etc.) stem from abandonment, neglect, and abuse within their relationships with their mothers.
